Primary Program

Our Primary program covers a period of rapid development in our students’ lives. Children are fascinated by the world around them, and their learning experiences at Riverbend lay the foundation for future academic success. Primary classrooms are organized to encourage both the younger child’s interest in concrete manipulative materials and the older child’s increasing understanding of abstract concepts. Older students build confidence by helping their younger friends succeed at tasks they have completed themselves.

Montessori Materials

Montessori materials help students work through topics themselves. All “work” is designed to be visually appealing, sparking children’s natural curiosity. Specially designed hands-on materials isolate specific concepts, for example, weight, color, height, and allow children to focus on one skill at a time. Children learn through practice and repetition with these manipulatives, and develop a concrete understanding before moving to more abstract work.

Three-Year Cycle

During the Primary 3-year cycle, students spend 3 years in the same classroom. They begin their first year exploring their environment, gaining practical life skills, and learning from older friends. Second years have gained their footing, and their academic skills and interests begin to flourish. In the third year, students are Kindergarten role models, and they thrive in their leadership role. The mentoring relationship in multi-age classrooms is a hallmark of the Montessori experience.

Kindergarten Experiences

Kindergarteners are the leaders in the 3-year cycle. Outside the classroom, they have special experiences like weekly Forest Fridays and regular participation in K-8th grade assemblies throughout the year. They meet every afternoon with K’s from other classrooms, including weekly reading and writing lessons as well as special music classes and Design Lab classes. These programs help set them up for success as they prepare to transition to Lower Elementary.

In our Primary program, learning becomes more focused as children refine observational skills and master fundamental components of reading, writing, and mathematics. The exploration of the world expands to include other countries, cultures, and the Spanish language. “Using hands as tools for the mind,” children explore the natural world, strengthening independence and confidence.

Language

Students learn through manipulatives that build a deep understanding of the fundamental components of reading and writing.

Cultural Studies

The Global Showcase is an annual tradition where students creatively present what they’ve learned about different countries and continents.

Math

Montessori materials engage students in learning fundamental concepts that prepare them to approach learning with a mathematical mind.

Practical Life activities build confidence and independence through the development of self-care skills, concentration, and coordination.

Primary Program Curriculum Highlights

Practical Life activities build confidence and independence through the development of self-care skills, concentration, coordination, and a sense of order—all for later learning. Sensorial, hands-on materials that engage all of the senses initiate critical thinking skills, preparing students for future challenges in mathematics, science, and language.

From simple to complex, concrete to abstract, unique Montessori materials engage children in learning fundamental concepts that prepare them to approach learning with a mathematical mind.

The curriculum nurtures a love of language with manipulatives that build a deep understanding of the fundamental components of reading and writing. The environment is infused with books and a spirit of individual expression.

Cultural Studies capture the curiosity of students excited to explore their world. This area covers science, history, geography, and more. The annual Global Showcase allows students to deeply study a particular area of the world and create projects based on what they’re learning.

Spanish classes are offered weekly at the Primary level. The program includes music and concrete materials, which are fundamental elements for teaching and acquiring the Spanish language at this age.

Art is infused into the curriculum wherever possible. All Primary classrooms include a dedicated art area, and children in the Primary program engage with art daily. Kindergarteners spend time each week in the Art studio, engaging with various art materials in distinct, well-organized work areas.

Primary students enjoy music activities infused into their daily routine. In addition, they have monthly music classes with Jammin’ With You.

Primary students enjoy PE class weekly. Throughout the year, students are exposed to numerous sports and activities that spark excitement and a passion for physical education.

Primary students have Nature class, participating in nature walks and observing nature in action. With a hands-on and inquiry-based approach, the lessons are child-centered. Nature lessons coincide with classroom themes, so that these skills are continuously reinforced. Activities include movement games, observation using all the senses, dancing, singing and exploring. Forest Fridays is a weekly program for Kindergarten students where students spend a three-hour block in nature study. The experience begins with lunch as a community of learners, a lesson focus, and then ample time for guided and free outdoor exploration. This area of study is a key element of Riverbend’s culminating year in the Children’s House.

Spotlight: Kindergarten Tea

The Kindergarten Tea is a culminating experience at the end of the year that brings together many different skills and competencies that are developed in the Primary program. Parents and loved ones join the Kindergarteners for a special morning as they host this annual event. Students share what they’ve learn through their Grace and Courtesy studies by arranging flowers for the tables, welcoming their guests, taking their orders, and serving them tea.
