Upper Elementary

In the Upper Elementary program, students focus on building greater independence and responsibility as they begin to think more abstractly and explore more complex ideas. Teachers encourage students to make cross-curricular connections and to seek ever expanding academic challenges. At this level, students truly refine their time management skills as they are offered “freedom with responsibility.”

Self-Confidence

During the three years in Upper Elementary, students practice narrative writing, realistic-fiction writing, historical fiction, and memoir. Students share their writings with the Riverbend community at the Authors’ Breakfast. Each year, students take on greater responsibility and independence, and they discover new opportunities for leadership.

Small group lesson in Upper Elementary

Specialized Attention

Upper Elementary students receive specialized attention in their studies. Small group lessons help students to work collaboratively and to learn from others about different ways to solve a problem. Students have the freedom to make choices and work at their own pace as they move through the curriculum. All classes are co-taught, so students can receive the support they need.

Model United Nations

Each year, sixth graders attend the Montessori Model United Nations conference, a simulation of the UN General Assembly and its committees. As delegates, students give speeches, write draft resolutions, discuss solutions, find consensus, and learn the rules of procedure, working cooperatively to solve problems that affect countries from every part of the world.

Students find their own pace of learning and challenge themselves in small-group lessons shaped to align with their individual needs. They can access curriculum beyond their grade level as concrete explorations lay the foundation for abstract learning. While students continue to explore concepts using concrete materials, technology begins to play a larger role in Upper Elementary, enhancing abstract learning and providing new pathways for student expression. The curriculum encourages students to collaborate, teach each other, and stimulate a love of learning.

English

Upper Elementary students become fluent readers, expressive writers, and confident oral presenters. Students develop skills in research, comprehension, and communication.

Mathematics

Upper Elementary students increase their understanding of the Montessori Math curriculum as they complete more complex work and begin to understand math theory.

Cultural Studies

Cultural Studies encompasses history, geography, and global education as students explore early human cultures, compare ancient civilizations, and investigate US history.

Science

The Science curriculum follows the three-year cycle in Upper Elementary, and the rotation includes botany, physics, chemistry, and
simple machines.

Upper Elementary Curriculum Highlights

Upper Elementary students apply reading and writing skills across the curriculum. They become more fluent readers, expressive and accomplished writers, and confident oral presenters in the process. Students develop skills in research, comprehension, and communication. During the three years in Upper Elementary, students practice narrative writing, realistic-fiction writing, historical fiction, and memoir. Writing mechanics and grammar are also woven into the work.

During their three years in Upper Elementary, students follow the Montessori Math curriculum, which includes geometry, fractions, word problems, and algebraic thinking. Each year students increase their understanding of the material and complete more complex work. The goal of the Montessori math curriculum is for students to truly understand math theory. Most mathematical concepts are explored using hands-on materials so students can integrate concrete experiences with abstract mathematical processes.

Cultural Studies encompasses history, geography, and global education in a three-year cycle. Upper Elementary students explore early human cultures, compare ancient civilizations, and investigate American history (pre-Colonial through the Constitution). Students are introduced to the structure of the U.S. system of government, and they learn about the purpose and activities of the United Nations. Through these explorations, students develop inquiry skills and familiarity with different types of resources that allow them to follow their academic interests.

The Science curriculum follows the three-year cycle in Upper Elementary, and the rotation includes botany, physics/chemistry, and simple machines. Botany and geography lessons weave together throughout the year, leaving students with a profound sense of place. Students enjoy outdoor experiential learning throughout the year on the Riverbend campus as well as at the Magullion Center (the nature property at our satellite campus).

Upper Elementary students have the choice to study either Mandarin Chinese or Spanish. One of the most important goals of our language programs is to develop a love of learning languages and to begin to appreciate the world from another perspective.

Students spend time in the Art studio each week. All of our work is based on the Elements and Principles of Design. Students are introduced to art concepts and techniques and are allowed to explore those skills creatively. Students work independently or collaboratively, just as they do in other classroom subjects, choosing the creative subject matter that inspire them, and using the individual time and space we give them to think and create. Riverbend students explore drawing, painting, design, drafting, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, and more.

Students attend music class two times a week. They’re exposed to a wide range of musical experiences, all intended to build a lifelong love of music. Upper Elementary students continue to work with solfege and deepen their music theory skills. Much of the work is modeled through singing, but the students have many opportunities to play various instruments in class, work with technology, and grow according to their unique levels. The Upper Elementary students also maintain a music listening journal, and they have frequent performance opportunities during the school year.

Upper Elementary students enjoy PE class weekly. Throughout the year, students are exposed to numerous sports and activities that spark excitement and a passion for physical education.

Upper Elementary students enjoy regular visits to the Magullion Center, the nature property at our satellite campus. This beautiful setting gives them the opportunity to learn about different types of plants and trees from around the world. The vast property is a wonderful place to explore and play, and also a serene setting for journaling and small group discussions.

Spotlight: Expert Projects

The Sixth Grade Expert Project is a capstone research and writing experience that provides students with an opportunity to research extensively a topic of their choosing, culminating in students presenting their research to the community. These presentations not only highlight students’ dedication and perseverance, but they also celebrate their significant growth and achievements. It’s an empowering experience for our sixth graders as they prepare to transition to our Middle School program!
